Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M. was on the bench.nHammond pleaded guilty to a charge that he used obscene language within hearing of persons in the Pier restaurant and amusement parlour.nNoster and Hammond were each fined £3 on each assault charge and Hammond was fined £3 on the obscene language charge. Each was also ordered to pay 15s for the damages to Purves’s spectacles.nInspector J. J. Halcrow said that the two accused went to the New Brighton pier at 5.30 p.m. on January 2. They had been drinking but were not drunk. For no apparent reason they abused Penwell who was collecting charges at the entrance to the pier. Penwell went to the restaurant kitchen and they followed him. Duffield, the proprietor, ordered them out and there was a scuffle. Hammond then used the obscene language which could be heard outside. Purves was in the milk bar in the amusement hall when he was assaulted by the two accused. Mr D. W. Russell, who appeared for both accused, said he was instructed that they were not the aggressors. They passed some remark to a girl at a juke box and Penwell went over and spoke to them. They followed him into the kitchen and were manhandled there.nMr Russell said that, in the last few weeks, five or six young men had been charged with assault at the New Brighton pier and the question arose as to who were the aggressors. The Magistrate said he was concerned only with the matter before him. Mr Russell said that the affair was caused by over indulgence in liquor by the two accused. The Magistrate said it was a disgraceful episode. He was going to assume that if they had been sober they would have done nothing of this sort.nnBIOGRAPHY: Press, Volume XCVI, Issue 28397, 2 October 1957, Page 9nTRAFFIC CASES In charges brought by the Transport Department the following fines were imposed:— Exceeding 30 miles an hour: Robert John Noster £4.nnBIOGRAPHY: Press, Volume XCVII, Issue 28494, 25 January 1958, Page 14nNo warrant of fitness: Robert John Noster, £1nnBIOGRAPHY: Press, Volume XCVIII, Issue 29010, 26 September 1959, Page 15nCycling at night without a light: Robert John Noster, £1 (no rear light, 10s).nnBIOGRAPHY: Press, Volume XCIX, Issue 29270, 30 July 1960, Page 11nDriving without due care and attention: Robert John Noster, £5nnBIOGRAPHY: Press, Volume C, Issue 29619, 15 September 1961, Page 18nRobert John Noster. a bus driver (Mr W.
