Samuel Norster – Convict – 5 January 1800 to 13 November 1863

I’d like to tell you that I have found someone I have been looking for for several years.   Samuel Norster, having been granted his Ticket of Leave on 17th Feb 1846, left Van Diemen’s Land and settled in South Australia. My information then told me that he married a Sarah Plowman but she disappeared.   Through help of a lady in Australia, I have now been able to piece together Samuel and Sarah’s life in South Australia.   I have listed a limited timeline below.   05...

John Richard Noster – 28 October 1839 to ?

Abraham Noster and Elizabeth Hansford had a daughter Elizabeth Noster who was baptised 29th October 1815. Her parents never married.   She had a son – John Richard Noster – born 28th October 1839. Again I have no father named.   I have yet to find his marriage/death/change of name etc....

Samuel Noster – 15 January 1827 to 26 November 1913

Samuel Norster (or Noster as he preferred to be known) was born in 1827.   He does not appear on the 1841 census, as far as I can find, nor any subsequent census in the UK.   He does appear getting married on 12th August 1882 in Dunedin, New Zealand. His first child was born on 20th August 1882, so it seems to have been a bit of a rush job !   There was a census in 1881, but he does not appear. There were residential status rules and he may not have complied – that is, more...

John Norster – 1884 to 13 Sept 1917

John Norster was killed in action in France on 13th Sept 1917. He was in the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment), and is buried in Plot 1, Row L, Grave 26, Monchy Cemetery, France.   He is remembered on the War Memorial in Gosport, Hampshire. For some reason he is also remembered on the War Memorial in Newhaven, Sussex.   As far as I am aware, all his family is Hampshire or Dorset based. Why would he be on a memorial in Newhaven – one of the little mysteries that...

Hannah Richards GILBERT – 1873 to 10th December 1896

Birth recorded as Anna Richards GILBERT. She married John Richard NORSTER in 2nd Qtr of 1896 in Newlyn, Cornwall and died 10th December 1986 of Phthisis (or Consumption).   She has 5 elder siblings and 3 younger ones. All of this is quite normal.   My problems occur because I cannot find out when (if) she was baptised. I can find all her elder siblings, but not her or her younger ones. They are not in the normal Parish registers, nor are they in Non-Conformist registers.   The only...
